Oil temperature sensor

The oil temperature sensor is a vital part of the engine system. The car's engine needs engine oil to function correctly. Engine oil is used to lubricate the moving parts of the engine. The harder the car works, the warmer the oil becomes. The oil temperature sensor continuously measures this temperature. The sensor alerts the driver when the temperature is too high. An excessively high oil temperature can ultimately lead to engine problems. Therefore, replace a faulty oil temperature sensor promptly. At Winparts, you can easily find the right sensors. Enter your complete car details on the website, so we can show you the correct parts.

The oil temperature sensor continuously measures the temperature of the engine oil. Engine oil is a vital fluid in your car's engine. It ensures that all moving parts move smoothly. It's crucial for the oil to be at the correct temperature to lubricate the engine system effectively. The oil pump draws engine oil from the sump and transports it under pressure to the engine components. Here, the oil lubricates the various parts and dissipates heat. Additionally, the oil collects dirt and wear particles, which gradually reduces its quality and causes it to heat up faster. Therefore, it's essential that the oil temperature sensor is functioning correctly. Below, you can read more about the symptoms of a faulty sensor.

Oil temperature sensor fault

A faulty oil temperature sensor can lead to engine problems. Therefore, you should replace a defective sensor promptly. You can recognise a defective sensor by the following symptoms:

  • False reading: It usually takes a few minutes for the oil to warm up. The temperature gauge on the dashboard reflects this. Does the temperature gauge suddenly show an elevated temperature within a minute? Then the sensor is likely faulty. Keep in mind that not every car make or model has a temperature gauge on the dashboard.
  • The oil temperature gauge doesn't move: An oil temperature gauge is an additional gauge that you can install on your car's dashboard. If the gauge no longer moves, the oil temperature sensor may be defective.

Replacing the oil temperature sensor

Replacing the oil temperature sensor is a straightforward job. Below, we explain how to replace the oil temperature sensor in 5 steps:

1. You can find the oil temperature sensor in the engine compartment. It's often located in the engine block or mounted on the cylinder head. Not sure where to find this sensor? Consult your vehicle's service manual.

2. Disconnect the connector from the sensor. The connector is secured with a clip, which you can easily release. Then, disconnect the cable from the sensor. Sometimes, a small amount of oil may leak when disconnecting components of the oil system. It's therefore handy to have a cloth at hand.

3. Remove the old oil temperature sensor with a spanner or socket wrench.

4. Install the new sensor in the same location and connect the electrical connector to it.

5. Check the oil level using the dipstick. If the level is too low, top up the engine oil.
